The goal is to provide a structured means of introducing the concept, as well as the elements of print, to young children. Introducing Print Awareness presents 26 letters, carefully showing and explaining the sound for each letter, how to produce the sound (diagrams provided), the differences between upper and lower case letters and how to finger spell each letter. Next, words are presented that begin with each of the sounds/letters showing between 6 and 20 pictures and the printed words for each. This section strategically moves toward the use of the words “sound” and “letter” almost interchangeably, carefully avoiding confusion between these two words.
